OVER THE TOP....Undertaker leg drops Batista in their Cyber Sunday showdown
wwe.com

THEY are not the names we would have picked out at the start of the year but the two men involved in the best in-ring feud of 2007 are Batista and The Undertaker.

Almost six months after their last meeting, the pair picked up where they left off by stealing the show at Cyber Sunday with another modern classic.

It was a good night for many of the federation’s other big names too, with Rey Mysterio, Finlay, Triple H and Umaga all impressing.

And your trusty Sun wrestling team was in Washington DC to witness the interactive PPV live.

Below is our diary of the night.

7.40pm(11.40pm UK time): After a day spent trying out all the versions of the new Smackdown vs Raw 2008 computer game, we were ushered into the appropriately named ‘Suite 316’ for the best view in the Verizon Arena. It’s a hard life sometimes.

Before the show, the traditional dark match takes place and we're given the chance to check out two new WWE tag teams as Jesse & Festus took on Deuce & Domino.

The only notable thing was just how over Festus was with the crowd, with loud chants and a big pop as his team won the match.

8.05pm: WWE fans cast more than 13million votes to choose the contests for Cyber Sunday, and their first decision was to put Finlay and Mysterio in a stretcher match.

It was the right option, as Smackdown’s best workers brought something new to the old stipulation of putting your foe on the trolley and getting him over a white line.

Twice Finlay knocked Rey out of the ring and straight onto the stretcher with Mysterio going one better sending his Belfast-born opponent onto the trolley with a perfectly timed 619.

After a mix-up with a TV camera lead stopping the stretcher moving, Rey sent Finlay sailing over the line to claim victory.

8.25pm: The first, and arguably, only surprise of the night saw The Miz get an ECW title shot with 39 per cent of the vote.

His loss to CM Punk was OK, but we spent the duration wondering why anyone would vote for him.

We put it down to a mix of his reality TV exposure, weak ECW roster, Punk supporters wanting to guarantee a win and disillusioned hardcore fans joking around.

8.40pm: Shawn Michaels is announced as the contender for Randy Orton’s WWE championship after polling 59 per cent.

Ken Kennedy then beats fellow vote loser Jeff Hardy in an unmemorable contest.

9.00pm: With Matt Hardy’s face still a mess, Kane is the fans’ choice to fight MVP for the US title in his place.

Sadly they had nowhere near the bout Matt would have put on, and the count-out ending is quite rightly met with boos.

9.20pm: Another title match, another cheap finish.

Randy Orton and Shawn Michaels wrestled well, especially given HBK’s injuries, but the ending ruined everything.

As Shawn went for Sweet Chin Music, Randy ducked and then used a low blow in front of the ref for a disqualification.

As with MVP, it means Orton loses the match but keeps the belt.

9.45: Like most of the 14,000 fans at the Verizon Arena, we wanted to see Triple H and Umaga in a cage match, but they still put on a super streetfight after 57 per cent of voters plumped for that instead.

The big move was Umaga running over two announce tables and then splashing Hunter through the third.

Triple H was always going to win though, getting the three count after a sledgehammer shot and Pedigree.

10.15: Mickie James topped the best Halloween costume poll for her American Indian get-up, although we much preferred Layla’s sexy cop.

10.30: In the biggest landslide of the night, 79 per cent of people picked Stone Cold Steve Austin to referee the main event and the place exploded for his stunners on Mick Foley and JBL.

Steve was almost anonymous afterwards though, making the wise choice to call things down the middle and allowing Batista and Undertaker to do their thing.

And just like at WrestleMania, it was the storytelling, reversals and near-falls that kept fans guessing throughout and made the bout so special.

After failing to down The Phenom with one Batista Bomb, and then another, we really started believe Big Dave couldn’t do it.

But a third Batista Bomb led to a clean win for The Animal, his first over Taker, and a happy ending to a strong PPV.

WrestleMania XXIV

WrestleMania XXIV is the forthcoming twenty-fourth annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It is scheduled to take place on March 30, 2008 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida. The event will be the first WrestleMania to be held in the state of Florida.

It will also be the second WrestleMania to be held entirely outdoors, the only other having been WrestleMania IX. WWE and the city of Orlando plan to host festivities that will span over a five-day period within the central Florida region, bringing numerous branding opportunities and television coverage, leading up to the event at the Citrus Bowl. Despite the risks of an outdoor show, WWE chairman Vince McMahon has announced that the “show will go on, regardless of the weather.” The Central Florida Sports Commission estimate WrestleMania XXIV will pump $25 million into the local economy while creating numerous jobs, and bring around 60,000 visitors to the city for the event.

WrestleMania XXIV will be a joint-promotion pay-per-view event, featuring performers from the RAW, SmackDown, and ECW brands. The tagline for WrestleMania XXIV is “The Biggest WrestleMania Under the Sun”. The official theme songs for the event are “Snow ((Hey Oh))” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and “Light It Up” by Rev Theory. Tickets went on sale to the public on November 3, 2007. Over 41,000 tickets were sold in 30 minutes, already making WrestleMania XXIV the highest-grossing event in the history of the Citrus Bowl.
