Torrie Wilson

Torrie Wilson Biography

Height: 5 foot 7

From: Boise, Idaho

Signature Move: Springboard ElbowEntrance

Amidst the potatoes, corn and wheat typically grown on the sprawling and spacious farms of Boise, Idaho, one of wrestling's most enticing Divas emerged.

Torrie Wilson, a Boise native, has been one of WWE's hottest Divas ever since debuting in 2001. Torrie got her start in WCW, but when Mr. McMahon purchased WCW, she quickly made the transition to WWE. No matter where Torrie Wilson is, though, she's always turning heads. In fact, her beauty is so great, that it can easily make other WWE Divas jealous. This could be a major reason why Candice and Victoria recently turned on the 1998 Miss Galaxy.

Ever since Torrie Wilson and Candice were traded to RAW in 2005, they had been attached at the hip along with Victoria. The three proved to be a dominant trio in the Women's Division, wreaking havoc on all of the other Divas. But Candice and Victoria viciously turned on Torrie during Candice's Playboy unveiling on RAW. Torrie was slated to get her chance at revenge at Saturday Night's Main Event in a tag team match. She was scheduled to team up with Trish Stratus to take on her former friends, Victoria and Candice.

But after Torrie cost Victoria her match against Trish Stratus, she was found knocked unconscious in the locker room by the Women's Champion. Trish found an autographed copy of Candice's Playboy on her body, but it's unproven whether or not Candice and Victoria were responsible for the attack.

The vicious attack on Torrie appeared to be a culimination of events over a period of a few weeks.

Candice became the latest Diva to don the cover of Playboy magazine, and she was certainly excited. In fact, after a recent Torrie Wilson loss, Candice said that losing didn't matter because she would be on Playboy in a couple of weeks.

The following week Torrie Wilson accompanied Candice to the ring for her Women's Championship opportunity against Trish Stratus. Candice went for a pinning combination close to the ropes, and Torrie reached out to give her extra leverage. The referee caught Torrie and broke up the pin. Within moments, Trish recovered and scored the victory over Candice.

Torrie tried to apologize backstage to Candice, but the Playboy covergirl wasn't hearing it. In fact, she answered Torrie's apology by slapping her across the face. Torrie sucked it up, though, and went to the ring with Victoria for Candice's Playboy unveiling.

Candice began to talk about how she was the hottest Diva to ever appear in Playboy, taking a jab at Torrie, who was also a former Playboy cover girl. Torrie decided to speak her mind and told Candice that she was being selfish. Candice lured Torrie in with an apologetic hug, but then she winked at Victoria and they attacked Wilson. Only time will tell how and when Torrie will get her revenge on her former friends.

Torrie may not be a Women's Champion, but she does hold one major distinction. She participated in the most-purchased match on WWE 24/7 Online - a Bikini Contest vs. Sable at Judgment Day 2002. Not only were Torrie and Sable decked out in two of the hottest bikinis ever seen, but they also sealed the match with a kiss that has to be seen to be believed.

WWE Diva

Diva is a term used by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to refer to its female, on-screen talent, used primarily as "eye candy". Divas fill positions such as valets, backstage interviewers, ring announcers and sometimes, wrestlers. Although "diva" is a relatively new term in the wrestling community, promotions have been using women as valets or wrestlers for years.

History

The first "Diva" in professional wrestling history was Tammy Lynn Sytch, better known in the WWF under her performing name "Sunny," who was a manager for various wrestlers in the WWF. Although the female managerial role was not a new concept in professional wrestling, the Sunny character brought a sexuality to the position that had seldom been seen in the business before.

After Sytch left the WWF, Rena Mero, known to WWF fans as "Sable," took the role of the prominent female performer in the promotion. Originally a manager for her then real-life husband, wrestler Marc Mero, she quickly eclipsed her husband in popularity. Her popularity lead to the re-instatement of the WWE Women's Championship, as well as the hiring of more female performers by the promotion. Sable became the first WWF female to refer to herself as a 'Diva' saying "I am the Diva of the WWF," on the April 19 edition of RAW in 1999. The term was coined instantly. Many fans regard her as the original WWF Diva. However, unlike Jacqueline Moore and Luna Vachon, the more physical Divas at the time, Sable later admitted that it was written in her contract that she was not allowed to take bumps.

Chyna held the WWE Intercontinental Championship three times between 1999 and 2000. She is the only woman in WWE history to have held the Intercontinental title.

Although Sable would leave the WWF after several years, the WWF would sign many more female performers during and after her employment with the company, and would promote them as "Divas." In 2000, newcomer Amy Dumas better known as "Lita" would focus her attention on the WWF Women's Championship. Lita performed more risk taking moves than the Divas before her, such as moonsaults and diving hurricanranas. She brought a higher standard of competition to the WWF Women's Division, while still having the sexual element as well. This combination got both the male and female fans interested in the evolving Women's Division. Moreover, Lita is the only Diva to have won the Women's Championship in RAW's main event.

Around the same time of Dumas' arrival, Trish Stratus made her debut. Stratus started off as a valet, who brought pure sexuality to the ring. Also later that year, Molly Holly made her debut. She was a contrast to most of the other Divas because she was given a more wholesome gimmick and more modest ring attire.

In the Autumn of 2001, Stratus was trained by then-Diva trainer Finlay and improved her in-ring ability, working her way up to the top of the division and winning the Women's Title. Dumas and Stratus have been credited as the women that changed the face of Women's Wrestling, as they brought sexuality and ability to the ring in such even amounts and kept the fans entertained.

In 2001, Chyna left the WWF due to real-life issues between herself, Triple H, and Stephanie McMahon. Her last feud was with Lita. However, in April 2002, Lita suffered a neck injury and was the first Diva to have neck fusion surgery. She was out of action for approximately one year.

Kelly Kelly of ECW competing in a bikini contest. It has become common to see these contests at WWE live events in place of traditional women's wrestling matches. Also during 2002, WWF changed its name to WWE and brought in a host of new female talent. Over the next few years, WWE hired more Divas than ever before. Stacy Keibler, Torrie Wilson, Terri Runnels, Christy Hemme, Miss Jackie, Dawn Marie, a returning Sable and numerous others would often compete in contests from "Pillow Fights" and "Bra & Panties Matchups" to "Bikini Contests", which were based more on the sexual appeal of the women involved, while distinctively Lita, Trish Stratus, Jazz, Gail Kim, Molly Holly, Jacqueline, Ivory and Victoria competed for the WWE Women's Title featuring match ups only previously participated by men such as Street Fights, Table Matches and the first ever Women's Steel cage match.

From 2002 to the present, WWE began hiring new Divas assigned to their development territories to train and wait to be called up to the main roster. These new Divas sometimes come from model agencies, the Independent circuit, and the Diva Search.

In 2003, Gail Kim became the first woman with a Korean background to win the Women's Championship. Also, Jacqueline held the WWE Cruiserweight Championship (a male title) briefly in 2004.

In the summer of 2006, WWE Announcers began referring to the Divas as "The Sexiest Women on Television." Towards the end of 2006, Trish Stratus and Lita left WWE, leaving Torrie Wilson, Victoria, and Lilian García from the previous generation of WWE Divas with a vast majority of recent arrivals. By this time, RAW ring announcer Lilian Garcia had been with WWE longer than any other current WWE Diva.

In 2007, Ashley Massaro, Torrie Wilson, Maryse Ouellet, Brooke Adams, Layla El, and Kelly Kelly shot a video for music producer and rapper Timbaland.
